That’s why Carmen and Tanika are passionate about the Hot Chocolate Circle — a program for girls aged 8 to 18, designed to build connection, resilience, and confidence.

“When I was in South Africa, there was a very similar girls’ program,” Carmen told Salt 106.5’s Jordana.

“I experienced firsthand how it impacted not only my own mental well-being, but also my sisters and even our whole family.”

She explained that the Hot Chocolate Circle is about “creating a space where girls can feel seen and heard and also learn evidence-based strategies to take care of their mental well-being.”

Warm, safe and empowering

“Hot Chocolate Circle is all about really creating a space that feels warm and safe and cozy,” Tanika said.

“It’s really a place where the girls can truly feel seen and known.”

Each session is about noticing the strengths and values of the girls, then gently encouraging them.

Stories of growth

The transformation is often clear, and while many girls are shy in their first session, by the second, they arrive eager to share.

Carmen recalled one participant who left a note at the end of the program, saying: “Thank you. This program honestly saved my life.”

How to get involved

The program is free to join, with several sessions running across the Sunshine Coast in term four.

Groups are meeting at Meriden Community Centre (‘Coping with Stress’ and ‘Building Resilience’ programs), Calvary Church, and Full Life Psychology in Maroochydore.

And if you miss out on these, don’t worry — there are more sponsored programs coming up next year.

The Hot Chocolate Circle shows the power of community, friendship, and a warm cup in hand to make a difference.
