While many of us will enjoy chocolate eggs, please be mindful to keep your pets safe and away from your sweet treats.

The hidden dangers for pets at Easter… Did you know that the chocolate you enjoy is poisonous for your dogs and cats? Chocolate contains cocoa which contains theobromine.

Theobromine is the component of cacao which is poisonous for all animals, the risk is greater for dogs due to their ability to sniff out chocolates and their likelihood of eating them once found.

Theobromine causes digestive issues, hyperactivity, slowed heart rate and dehydration. More advanced stages of poisoning can generate seizure-like fits and, unfortunately, death in some instances.

Protecting your pets this Easter

Whether you’re storing chocolate to give as gifts, hoarding your own stash or holding an Easter egg hunt, please ensure that you keep your pets away from chocolate treats this Easter.

Prevention is always, of course, better than the cure. Telling your children and visitors not to feed your pets chocolates, and of the dangers associated with this will assist in helping your pets enjoy the Easter period safely.

What to do if you suspect your pet has eaten some chocolate

If you suspect that your dog or cat has gotten into some chocolate, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Theobromine poisoning is treatable, however the outcomes are always more favourable the sooner the pet is able to be treated.

Pets will often try to steal food if it is left unattended or beg from us if they see us eating. A number of foods harmless to humans are toxic to pets.

In addition to chocolate, Xylitol – an artificial sugar free sweetener found in a number of low calorie products, Macadamia nuts, grapes and raisins, onions, alcohol, caffeinated drinks and garlic are some of the common foods we eat that are not suitable for pets.

Pet Health Insurance Services wishes you all a safe, fun and pawsome Easter.
