New research from Mission Australia is bringing hope: early tenancy support can keep people safely in their homes and prevent the trauma of homelessness.

Key Points:

  • 98% of people who receive help early stayed in their homes and avoided homelessness.
  • “The right help at the right time also helps [people] feel happier, healthier and more connected to their communities.”
  • Up to 3.2 million Australians are at risk of homelessness—sometimes just one rent increase, job loss or eviction away from crisis.

Deputy CEO of Mission Australia Ben Carblis says the results speak for themselves.

“A safe, secure and truly affordable home is more than just shelter,” he said.

“It’s the foundation people need to build their lives, find hope and plan for their future.”

The Tenancy Support Impact Summary – Safe and secure homes: Stopping homelessness before it begins reviewed five years of Mission Australia’s tenancy support programs.

The findings were clear—98% of people who received help stayed in their homes and avoided homelessness.

The right help at the right time

Ben shared that the impact goes beyond housing.

“The people we work with say the right help at the right time not only keeps them living in their homes but also helps them feel happier, healthier and more connected to their communities.”

Four in five people reported feeling better overall, and many experienced improved mental health and less stress, Ben explained. That sense of safety and stability “makes all the difference.”

Homelessness can be prevented

Right now, up to 3.2 million Australians are at risk of homelessness—sometimes just one rent increase, job loss or eviction away from crisis. Early intervention is vital.

“Early support gives people the chance to avoid the trauma and hardship of homelessness and the stress of navigating Australia’s broken housing system.”

Once someone loses their home, the road back is steep.

“Rents have skyrocketed, rental properties are scarce, and social housing waitlists stretch for years,” Ben explained.

A call to act together

Mission Australia is asking for a $500 million Homelessness Prevention Transformation Fund to expand tenancy support programs and help stop homelessness before it begins.

“By intervening early, we’re both supporting people to stay living in their homes and reducing the cost to governments,” Ben said.

He’s hopeful Australians will join in this mission.

“Homelessness is solvable. With the right support, investment and collective action, together we can end homelessness in Australia.”
