“I pray that the eyes of your heart will see.” (Ephesians 1:18, CEB)

Key Points

  • There are a few examples in the gospels of the disciples failing to see and understand the messages Jesus was trying to communicate. This often came from a ‘blindness of the heart’, and we too can miss revelations in our own lives if we are not too careful.
  • After the disciples finally understood the true Kingdom of God and the true message Jesus taught, their eyes were opened to understanding His full glory.
  • Once we fix our ‘lenses in life’ to see the world the way God sees it, we will never be blind again.

When Jesus fed the four thousand, it made a huge impact on the disciples. They thought that finally Jesus was about to announce himself as the true King of Israel, drive out the Roman occupiers, and end the hunger and poverty once and for all.

As they continued their journey after this miracle, “the disciples had forgotten to bring bread” (Mark 8:14). Then Jesus said to them,

“Why are you talking about having no bread? Do you still not see or understand? …Do you have eyes but fail to see, and ears but fail to hear? …When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many basketfuls of pieces did you pick up?” – Mark 8:17–19

This story is all about the things you can see with your eyes. You can see the infinite riches of God poured out for you. Before multiplying the loaves and the fishes, Jesus had asked the disciples,

“How many loaves do you have?” – v.5

They had looked and counted only seven. But their physical eyes deceived them. They needed to see with their hearts, and then they would have seen the infinite riches of God poured out for them.

It’s the same with you and with me.

Once you see the truth of the reality of the Kingdom of God, and the riches of His grace, you will never be blind again!

Reflection: Can you think of one example from your life that is only explainable by the spiritual reality of the Kingdom of God? Then think of someone who might be encouraged by your experience. Share it with that person.
