What Christmas Means to Me | Day 2: Wonder that is Never Lost
For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
I have just become a Granny for the second time, and the experience of welcoming a new little one into our family has not lost its wonder. I spent many years as a midwife praying blessings, often silently, over new life as I became the first person in this world to place my hands on the baby, helping to move a new life from birthing to holding.
The wonder of a God who chose to allow His very nature to be held in human form and who chose to reveal Himself in a new way by being birthed into this world, dependent and small, never ceases to amaze me. The God who holds everything in His hands, arrived to be held by a young mother and father who entered parenthood with His birth.
This Christmas as I hold my granddaughter, I’ll be filled again with the way holding new life makes me smile and stirs my heart. Have you known that feeling? More than a warm affection, it breaks open the heart to love in surprising ways that words seem inadequate to describe. It’s a reminder that God still believes in humanity, and that He is still a God who believes birthing new life is our hope for the future.
This year, Christmas holds the opportunity for me to welcome again the God of the universe who by His very nature births and holds life. The wonder is never lost.
