And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever – the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you. John 14:16–17 (NIV)
Key points:

Imagine how the disciples must have felt when Jesus, who had led them for three years, told them He was going to leave.
They must have wanted to cling to Him as a young child clings to the safety of a parent they trust to protect them from the fears of the uncertain world they must face.
But His reassuring words were not empty.
The promise Jesus made was not just for the ones who walked with Him and whom He had to leave behind.
Our ever-present advocate, mediator, sense of the truth, and source of power should never become so familiar we forget the gift He is.
It was for every believer who would come after them until He returned again.
Jesus promised the presence of the advocate who would do as He did.
Who would teach, convict and strengthen every disciple of Jesus, reminding us of the words Jesus shared when He walked the earth, allowing us to experience the presence of God in a tangible way.
He makes Himself available to all who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.
He came to them then, just as He comes to us now.
Our ever-present advocate, mediator, sense of the truth, and source of power should never become so familiar we forget the gift He is.
He was not just for those who walked with Jesus, not just for the people of Israel… the Holy Spirit is for all of us.
He makes Himself available to all who have accepted Jesus as their Lord and Saviour, available to abide with us always and forever, and someone we should never take for granted.
